Abstract
501,540. Air turbines. BERND, A. Aug. 31. 1937, No. 23846. [Class 110(iii)] [Also in Group XVIII] Display and like elements are rotated bv convection currents which are given a whirling motion by allowing the air to enter a casing surrounding the element by way of an opening, and locating a source of heat either within or below the casing. The element may be viewed through the casing, or may operate a member located outside the casing. Fig. 6 shows a casing 26 fitted with stationary fan blades 28 which direct the air rising from a heating resistance 27 tangentially against vanes 31 extending radially from a drum 29 which forms a rotatable table for supporting an article for display. In lieu of, or in addition to, the blades 38, lateral openings 32 may be provided through which air directed by curved screens 33 reaches the vanes 31. The screens 33 may be rockable about a vertical axis to make the drum rotate in either direction and in all cases shutters may be arranged over the openings to adjust the speed. A resistance 34 may be located also above the drum; The spindle of the drum 29 may extend upward and carry a rotating platform above the casing 26, or have fitted a pulley by which it drives external mechanism. A plurality of such spindles each furnished with vanes may be arranged parallel to one another in a casing. The heating means may be a lamp which illuminates a stationary transparency.
