[Class 135] [Also in Group I] A valve applicable for use in water-softening ur water-filtering apparatus comprises a casing with at least two spigots for the attachment of water flow conduits, and with a union for securing the casing detachably to a water supply tap, a water-delivery orifice, and a movable valve element in the casing which controls the supply of liquid to either one of the two spigots and the withdrawal of liquid from the other spigot or alternatively closes both spigots and allows direct communication between the union and the delivery orifice. In the construction shown, a valve casing 10 provided with a tapered bore 11 and two spigot members 12, 13 is detachably secured to a water tap 17 by means of a union 15 and a split ring 16. The members 12, 13 are adapted to be connected by flexible hoses 23, 24 to the inlet and outlet, respectively, of a watersoftening apparatus 27. A tapered plug valve 19 formed with channels is mounted within the bore 11 and is rotatable through 180‹ by means of an actuating member 28. With the valve in the position shown in Fig. 1, hard water from the tap 17 flows into the softening apparatus, and the softened water flows out through the outlet 21. When the valve is rotated through 90‹, hard water flows through the outlet 21 by way of a recess 18 in the casing 10, as shown in Fig. 2. On rotation of the valve through a further 90‹, the hard water flows through the softener in the opposite direction to the normal, issuing finally from the outlet 21.
