500,787. Hand driving - mechanism for cycles &c. SOUHART, J. P. July 22, 1938, No. 21781. Convention date, July 26, 1937. [Class 136 (ii)] In mechanism for driving the front wheels of cycles and like vehicles by oscillation of the handle-bar, the movements of the handlebar are transmitted to free-wheel driving sprockets &c. on the front wheel through multi. plying levers. The handle-bar 1 is mounted on a shaft 2 adapted to oscillate in a bearing 3 at the upper end of the stem 4, and its two arms are connected by ball joints 6, 7 to rods 8, 9, which are jointed to levers 10, 11 pivoted at 12 to the fork 14. The free ends of the levers 10, 11 are connected to chains 15, 16 meshing with free-wheel sprockets 17, 18 on the hub of the front wheel. The chains 15, 16 are interconnected by a cable 21 passing over a pulley 22, which is mounted on an arm 23 supported by stays 24, 25. The pivot spindle 12 may be connected by a chain or other transmission to the pedal spindle, so that the hand propulsion can act on both wheels when desired.
