500,242. Artificial threads, bands, and tubes. FREUDENBERG, W., FREUDENBERG, R., FREUDENBERG, H., FREUDENBERG, O., BECKER, O. W., and BRAUN, E. March 14, 1938, No. 7888. [Class 2 (ii)] Flexible threads, bands, tubes and the like are prepared by shaping a mixture consisting of swollen vegetable, animal or artificial fibres on the one hand, and a smaller quantity, e.g. 10-15 per cent of swollen and disintegrated animal hides or sinews on the other. The products may be treated before, during or after their production with tanning or hardening agents. Animal fibres, e.g. hair and wool, are subjected before swelling with acid or alkali, to an oxidizing or chlorinating treatment, vegetable fibres may be swollen by grinding in the presence of water, and artificial fibres, e.g. viscose fibres, may bo swollen by treatment with water or aqueous salt solutions, e.g. calcium thiocyanate solutions. There may bo added to the materials, softeners such as glycerine and sodium lactate, plasticizers such as latex and aqueous emulsions of artificial resins, fillers, pigments and the like. Shaping of the mass may be effected through nozzles with rotating nozzle parts, or through tapering nozzles. Specifications 429,039 and 429,040 are referred to.
