Abstract
500,184. Anti -crease treatments; dyeing. ROBERTS, A. E., and WATKINS, W. May 1, 1937, No. 12447. [Class 15 (ii)] Cellulose textile materials are steeped in an acid solution of formaldehyde or its equivalent for 2 hrs. or more during which time a reaction is brought about between the materials and the solution, dried and heated ; the materials have an improved resistance to creasing and affinity for dyes. The acid condition of the formaldehyde solution is brought about by the addition of a weak acid, e.g. acetic acid, or an acid salt, e.g. aluminium sulphate. Strong mineral acid may also be added to the formaldehyde solution. The material may be loaded or filled prior to the formaldehyde treatment ; or it may be treated with reinforcement-forming substances capable of reacting with the formaldehyde during the heat treatment, such substances, if resin forming, being in insufficient quantity to produce anti-crease effects of themselves. After drying.and before the heat treatment, the material may be subjected to a mechanical treatment to separate individual fibres according to Specification 465,875. In an example, a fabric was immersed for 51 hrs. in a solution comprising formalin and acetic acid, dried and heated to 130‹ C. for ¢ hr. at 30 lb. above atmosphere. Other examples are similar and comprise further additions to the bath of ammonium chloride, urea with aluminium sulphate, ammonium dihydrogen phosphate and ammonium phosphate. According to a further example, the fabric is steeped for 24 hrs. in a solution comprising formalin, hydrochloric acid and aluminium sulphate, dried and heated.
