Abstract

A composition for use in intaglio printing on fabrics comprises one or more synthetic resin condensation products of polyvinyl alcohol with one or more aldehydes, one or more plasticizers and one or more organic solvents which are miscible with water and have a rate of evaporation approximating to that of water. Specified solvents are glycols, glycol monochlorhydrins, glycol ethers and their esters and ethyl lactate. Dyes or pigments may be incorporated. Examples are given of compositions containing (I) a polyvinyl aceto-formal as described in Specification 430,136, methyl and butyl phthalates and ethyl-p-toluenesulphonamide (as plasticizers) and the acetic acid ester of ethylene glycol monoethyl ether, glycol chlorhydrin and the monobutyl ether of ethylene glycol (as solvents); (II) the same polyvinyl aceto-formal and plasticizers with ethylene glycol monoethyl ether and its acetic acid ester, xylene and ethyl lactate (as solvents) and bronze powder. The printed fabric may be after-treated to dye, parchmentize, mercerize, immunize or carbonize the non-printed areas. In examples: (1) a cr<\>zepe de chine natural silk fabric, printed with a composition as above, is dyed in an aqueous solution at 60 DEG C. containing Naphthylamine navy blue 5BCL, Naphthylamine black 4BCL, sodium sulphate and formic acid; (2) a cotton veil, similarly printed, is padded in conc. sulphuric acid at 10 DEG C. to parchmentize the non-printed areas, rinsed, mercerized, rinsed, acidified, rinsed and tentered; (3) a natural silk fabric with a second reinforcing warp of viscose is printed with a composition as above, overprinted with a thickened solution of aluminium chloride or sulphate and carbonized. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the use of screen printing methods and the replacement of the polyvinyl condensation products by cellulose esters, e.g. nitro- or acetyl-cellulose, and includes an example of a composition containing nitrocellulose, ethyl alcohol, castor oil, tricresyl phosphate, butyl phthalate, ethyl lactate and the monobutyl ether of ethylene glycol. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
