Abstract

Cereals, such as oats, are sprayed with water which may be warmed and which may contain chemical reagents such as sodium bisulphite until they swell, the free water removed preferably by centrifugal action, and the cereals subjected to impact against a wall, for example, in a centrifugal machine to loosen the hulls from the kernels. The material is then dried and the loose hulls removed by an air current. The cereals are graded and unhulled kernels removed for treatment. Steam may be used for the moistening treatment and when water is used, the quantity may be sufficient to wash the grain.
