Abstract

To impart to cellulose acetate &c. filaments, threads, &c., an affinity for direct, acid &c. colouring matters, there is dissolved in the spinning solution a proportion of gelatine, and the solution is spun either by the dry method or by coagulation in a bath containing formalin or other substance having a similar coagulating action towards gelatine; in both cases the aim is to prevent loss of gelatine during the process of filament formation. The gelatine may be used in a proportion of 4-20 per cent of the cellulose acetate &c. Solutions of cellulose acetates and gelatine in acetic and formic acids are instanced, and suitable coagulating baths are aqueous solutions of sodium and potassium acetates containing formaldehyde.
