Abstract

498,191. Looms. SHIMWELL, O. and SHIMWELL, D. W. Oct. 5, 1937, No. 26916. [Classes 142 (i) and 142 (iii)] Lays; beat-up motions ; stop-motions, shuttle.-The lay is pivoted to short and long links which swing about two shafts d, e and cause the shuttle track to keep just below the lower line of the warp shed but bring the lay well below such line at the' beat up. The reed part is separate from the shuttle-box parts, the boxes and the reed moving together during the picking period, after which the reed part moves forward at an increased speed to beat-up, unless the shuttle fails to box. As shown in Fig. 1, the shuttle-box parts a are mounted on links b, c and are operated by an eccentric g. The reed part is mounted on links m, n and is operated by a cam t through a lever r and aligned toggle links p, q. If the shuttle does not box the swell a<1> lowers an arm 50 and raises an arm i both on a shaft a<4>. At the beat-up the arm 50 engages a slide block 51 which displaces the stop lever 56 and applies a brake 54, while the arm i engages the catch lever v and through the links w, x, y, breaks the toggle p, q to prevent beatup. As shown in Fig. 5, the reed part is operated through a lever 5 which is pinned at 6 to the long link 7 and pivots about a shaft carried by one 11 of a pair of toggle links 11, 12. Normally the pivots of the lever 5 and link 7 are in line, but when the shuttle does not box, an arm 10 corresponding to the arm i, Fig. 1, carried by the lever 5 engages a lever 16 and through links 15, 18, 14, breaks the toggle 11, 12 to prevent beat-up. As shown in Fig. 8, all parts of the lay are operated from a crank 27, the shuttle parts through a bell-crank lever 25 pivoted at 26 and a link 29, and the reed part through a cam slot 24 in the lever 25 and a link 34 normally held in a higher position than shown by aligned toggle links 40, 39. The Figure shows the parts in position when the shuttle has not boxed, the toggle 39, 40 being broken and the arm 42 operating the stop mechanism 43.
