Abstract

Partially softened and de-acidified water is obtained by passing the water first through a layer of hydrogen-ion exchange-material and then through a layer of similar material saturated with alkali or alkaline-earth metal ions. A suitable arrangement of layers may be obtained by treating a single bed of exhausted hydrogen-ion exchange-material with sufficient acid to regenerate only the upper portion of the bed. After passing through the two layers, the water may be de-carbonated by aeration or boiling and then finally softened by passage through base-exchange material charged with alkali-metal ions.
