Abstract
497,936. Elastic fabrics. SMITH, H. A., and SMITH, M. E. June 25, 1937, No. 17739. Convention date, June 27, 1936. [Class 142 (iv)] The fabric comprises elastic weft threads 10, warp threads 12, 13, which may be elastic or inelastic, and elastic reinforcing or stiffening cords 11, of larger gauge than the threads 10. The warp threads 13 pass to one side of the cords, whilst the warp threads 12 pass to the other side where they interweave with the wefts. The cords 11 are thus caused to project and form ribs. Selvage threads 14 are provided. The fabric is used for corsets and girdles &c., and the cords are preferably arranged in spaced bands or strips, which may extend vertically in the garment. The weft threads may comprise a rubber core, a base winding of fibrous yarn, and an outer but opposite winding of double strands, the cords 11 having similar windings. The fabric may be woven in its entirety with stiffening cords and strips cut therefrom but used with plain elastic fabric to be incorporated capable of stretching in one or two directions.
