Abstract
497,624. Universal joints. THIRY, L. Oct. 29, 1937, No. 29585. Convention date, Nov. 7, 1936. [Class 80 (ii)] [Also in Group XXV] An elastic connection between two members, such as the shafts 1, 2 in a cardan joint, of which the longitudinal axes meet one another and each is adapted to take up any angular position relative to the other within a limiting cone, comprises at least one ring 7 of elastic material of rounded cross-section inserted between co-operating surfaces of the members on each side of the plane XX bisecting the angle between the axes of the members, the rings on opposite sides of the plane having different natures, dimensions or arrangements so as to afford different degrees of elasticity according to whether the members are moved towards or away from one another. The rings 7 are radially deformed, for example by circumferential elongation, so that they will adhere to the surfaces of the members and will roll without sliding on these surfaces when the members are displaced. In the form shown, the shaft 1 has a head 3 which is symmetrical about a plane at right-angles to its axis and the shaft 2 has a corresponding socket 4, so that the rubber rings 7 have the same size and arrangement, but one of the rings is made harder than the other, for example by a difference in composition, so that the resistance to motion in a direction which produces compression in one ring is greater than to motion in the opposite direction. This difference of resistance may be obtained by making the head 3 or the socket 4 of different size or shape on one side of the plane XX from the other, by placing the rings at different distances from the plane XX, or by making the rings of different initial dimensions ; any of these devices may be used in combination. The corresponding surfaces of the head 3 and socket 4 need not be parallel as in the form shown, and may be curved longitudinally, for example spherical or ellipsoidal. Stops may be provided for limiting the relative displacements of the members. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 also states that " adjusting means may be provided adapted to vary the initial deformations of the various elastic masses, for example by bringing one or more of the surfaces which determine at least one of the annular spaces to a greater or less distance from the other." This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
