Abstract
496,542. Casting and rolling sheets. WILLIAMS, W. P. (American Rolling Mill Co.) June 22, 1938, No. 18606. [Classes 83 (i), 83 (ii), and 83 (iv)] Composite &c. sheets.-Pools of molten metal 4 flowing down the constrictions between a separate central well 2 and a pair of cooled roll surfaces 1<1> form solidified surfaces 19 to enclose the same or a different metal 18 flowing from the central well to form, continuously, sheet metal of composite or homogeneous structure. The central well 2 is made of refractory material and is curved at its wedge tips 17 and is adjustable up or down by screws 3, Fig. 3, to vary the thickness-defining space between it and the copper shells 11 of the rolls 1. The shells 1<1> are kept cool by a cooling medium supplied to the space between the shell and the roll proper from, e.g. trunnion pipes 15. The ends of the well are closed by refractory damming blocks 7 slotted to receive edge forming rolls 6, the solidification of the edges being assisted by steam supplied by cooling nozzles 22.
