Abstract
496,518. Printing-surfaces; damping lithographic plates. HARRIS-SEYBOLDPOTTER CO. Aug. 26 1937, No. 23451. Convention date, June 16. [Class 100 (ii)] A solution of a substance containing a polyacrylic compound is employed in the preparation of a metal planographic plate or as a dampening fluid during printing. The compound, which must be in water-soluble or water dispersible form, may be polyacrylic acid, methyl-acrylic acid, or a salt thereof, preferably the ammonium salt. The pH value of the solution may be controlled by neutralizing, and if desired the solution can be rendered alkaline to a value of pH8. A water-soluble salt of phosphoric or chromic acid may be added when the solution is to be employed in dampening; when printing with excessively greasy inks, a mild organic acid such as gluconic acid or a mixture thereof with glucono lactones and pyruvic or levulinic acid, is added to prevent formation of scum. For treating the plate preparatory to printing, a solution of from 2-5 per cent by weight can be used and for dampening a solution of À04-À10 per cent is employed ; an approximately equal amount of organic acid or one-tenth of the amount of a salt of phosphoric or chromic acid may be added.
