Abstract

496,393. Turning-gear. C.A.V.-BOSCH, Ltd., and GLASER, W. H. May 29, 1937, No. 14979. [Class 7 (v)] In an engine starter in which the axial movement of a pinion e into mesh with an engine gear q is effected by an electromagnet h which also actuates a switch controlling the supply of current to the starting motor, a rod a arranged between the armature b and the outer casing c of the motor is connected at its ends to the pinion and to the movable part of the electromagnet. As shown, the rod is connected to the pinion by a lever d pivoted on the casing c and engaging a collar e<1> on the pinion, which slides on a sleeve f driven from the armature shaft g. The plunger i of the electromagnet h carries a lateral arm j acting upon the rod a through a thrust piece l and a rubber or other resilient member m in a sleeve k secured to the rod. A member o on the sleeve k normally separates contacts p in the circuit of the starting motor. On closing a pushbutton switch, current is supplied to the electromagnet h and to the motor through a resistance. The movement of the plunger j brings the pinion e into mesh with the engine gear q and allows the contacts p to engage, cutting out the resistance from the motor circuit.
