Abstract
496,281. Making glass tubes. FISCHER, M., FISCHER, H., and FISCHER, M., (trading as GLASWERK G. FISCHER). Feb. 22, 1937, No. 5196. Void. Convention date, Feb. 20, 1936. [Class 56] Glass tubes composed of two or more layers of different character are made by placing a gather b formed on a blowpipe a, within a ring c of a different kind of glass. The gather is then expanded by blowing until it makes contact with and is fused to the ring. The combination is then re-heated and drawn into a tube in the usual manner after which the end portions b<1>, b<2> of the original gather are broken away. The ring may be heated to near its softening point before the operation of expanding the gather and the latter may consist of two or more different layers. The ring may be in two semi-cylindrical sections of different glasses, and the tube during drawing may be twisted. Tubes made in the above manner may be used for illumination, either as filament or electric discharge lamps, and they may be composed of one or more layers of opal or luminescent glass.
