Abstract

Salts of 2 : 6-diiodo-phenoxy-aliphatic acid-4-sulphonic acids are prepared by reacting a 2 : 6-diiodo-phenol-4-sulphonate with a halogen-substituted aliphatic acid containing 2-4 carbon atoms. The sulphonates may be those of sodium, potassium, lithium, ammonium, diethylamine and diethanolamine. The products, which are water-soluble, are useful as X-ray opaque media in urography. The example describes the preparation of the disodium salt of 2 : 6-diiodo-phenoxyacetic acid-4-sulphonic acid by heating sodium 2 : 6-diiodo-phenol-4-sulphonate with sodium chloracetate in aqueous solution. The preparation of mixed salts is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 also refers to the production by similar means of phenoxy-aliphatic acids containing a sulphonate group and at least one iodine atom in any position in the phenyl nucleus. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
