[Class 60] A device for sharpening knives comprises two sharpening discs driven, through gearing, by the longitudinal reciprocation of the knife in contact with the discs. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, the device comprises a casing 2 in which are rotatably mounted two overlapping sharpening discs 1, each provided with a toothed ring 7 the rings being engaged respectively by pinions 8 on shafts 6 rotatably supported in tongues 9 of the casing and in pivoted plates 11. The shafts 6 carry friction knobs 5 which engage the sides of a knife 4, which lies in a slot 3 in the casing and is reciprocated in contact with the discs ; the knobs 5 are pressed by springs 13 against the knife and serve to rotate the discs 1, either in the same direction with reversal on reversal of the movement of the knife as shown in Fig. 1, or in opposite directions. The sharpening angle between the discs is made variable by mounting the discs on arms 14 pivoted at 15 and acted upon by a tension spring 16 ; a handle 17 may be used to hold the discs at any required angle setting, which setting may be read from a pointer 18 and a scale 19, and catches may be provided to hold the discs at any desired angle setting. In the construction shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the discs 1 both rotate in the same direction, the direction being unchanged upon reversal of the movement of the knife, and for this purpose the discs are driven, through toothed or friction rings 23 and through pinions 22 carried by the shafts 6, which are pivoted at 20, so as to rock when the movement of the knife is reversed. In a modification, the knife is carried by clamps on a bar formed with rack teeth on its edges for engagement with pinions on the shafts 6.
