Abstract

Filaments, films, and other shaped articles made from protein solutions by coagulation and treatment with a hardening agent such as formaldehyde, are improved in their resistance to hot acids and/or in their water-repellent properties by subjecting them to the action of a volatile anhydride or ketene of an aliphatic acid. The anhydride or ketene may be employed in vapour or liquid form or in solution. In the latter case suitable solvents for the anhydride or ketene are volatile substances such as trichlorethylene, ligroin, toluene, benzene or mixtures of these, or non-volatile substances such as olive oil or turkey red oil. In one example, ground nuts are extracted with a saline or alkaline solution, and the protein is precipitated from the solution with sulphur dioxide. The protein is dissolved in an aqueous solution of urea, and, after ageing, is spun into a bath containing ammonium sulphate, sulphuric acid, glycerol, zinc chloride, and water. The filaments so formed are hardened with formaldehyde, dried, and subjected in the form of threads, staple fibre, yarn or fabric, to the action of acetic anhydride vapour. Other examples refer to the treatment of hardened filaments of ground nut protein or casein with acetic anhydride or ketene. It is stated that the treatment with anhydride or ketene modifies the dyeing properties of the protein filaments, &c., so that the treated articles have an affinity for acid dyestuffs of the same order as that of wool.
