Abstract
In the production of alkali polyphosphates or mixtures thereof from melts of alkali orthophosphates in which the ratio Alk2O : P2O5 lies between 1 : 1 and 2 : 1, the melts or the solid products obtained therefrom are tempered, i.e. maintained for several hours at a constant or slightly falling temperature, within the range 650 to 200 DEG C., followed by rapid or slow cooling. Products which have solidified may be heated up to the softening temperature and tempered at this temperature. In the production of tripolyphosphate from a melt having a Na2O : P2O5 ratio of 5 : 3, tempering is effected at a temperature between 500 and 200 DEG C., followed by slow cooling, whilst in the production of tetrapolyphosphate from a melt having a Na2O : P2O5 ratio of 3 : 2 tempering is effected at temperatures between 550 and 650 DEG C., until the melt solidifies, and the melt is then suddenly cooled; in the latter case slow cooling of the tempered melt gives a mixture of tripolyphosphate and trimeta phosphate. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the following subject-matter: the production of crystals from the polyphosphates obtained by dissolving them in water and salting them out with a sodium compound such as sodium hydroxide or sodium chloride, or by introducing them into solutions of such sodium compounds. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
