Abstract
495,042. Electric tests ; mechanical switches without quick action. MARKS & SPENCER, Ltd., and BUTT, C. W. J. CLEGG-. May 5, 1937, No. 12869. [Class 37] [Also in Group XXXVII] Apparatus for testing devices such as electric irons and fires for continuity, and for visually comparing lamps for brilliance, comprises an auto-transformer 10 fed from mains 12, 13 through a fuse 23 and tapping 15, 16, corresponding to the mains voltage, tappings 24 on the output side of the transformer being connected to a rotary selector switch 11 whereby the appropriate voltage may be connected to lamp sockets 29 and socket connections 32, 33, 34 for other connectors. According to the invention the selector switch 11 and a make- and-break switch 22 in the transformer circuit are so located as to be operated simultaneously by the same hand of the operator. Lamps of the same voltage but different wattage are compared visually for brilliance by inserting them in the sockets 29. The sockets 32, 33, 34 are for the insertion of plugs connected to irons &c. in which continuity is indicated by the glowing of a lamp 39 in series therewith. Further sockets 40, 41, 42 and a switch 43 are for testing devices directly from the mains supply. Switch construction. The switch 11 comprises a rotary shaft 47, Fig. 2, mounted in a panel 54 and carrying a contact arm 26 movable over fixed contact studs 25 by means of a knob 48 having a radial pointer 50 moving over a voltage scale on the panel The switch 22 comprises two electrically-connected studs 56, 58 fixed in the panel 54 and a contact ring 55 rigid with an insulating ring 52 slidably carried by the spindle 47. Springs 53 normally lift the contact ring out of engagement with the studs. In operation the selector switch is rotated by the knob 48 against the action of a spring 51 until the correct voltage is indicated by pointer 50 and the ring 52 is then depressed to close the contacts 55, 56.
