Abstract

494,405. Cleaning grain. MENEUX, C., BOURDIN, S. G., and CHAUSSE, L. April 25, 1938, No. 12283. [Class 58] Wild garlic or similar impurities are separated from cereal grain by feeding the mixture of hulled and partly ground grain and garlic on to distributing rolls 2, 3, spaced slightly apart and rotating in the same direction over a trough 4 so that the material passes in the form of a sheet between one or more pairs of rollers 7, 8, rotating in opposite directions preferably at slightly different angular speeds. The roller 8 is provided with grooves 9 and flutes 10, as shown in Fig. 2, by which the garlic seeds are picked out from the meal, these seeds being removed from the grooves and flutes by a slowly rotating brush 12 having piassaba or goose feather bristles. The other roller also may be provided with grooves and flutes. The meal, freed from garlic, passes to grinding cylinders 23, 24 and then to bolting devices. The garlic seeds with some bran and meal fall from the brush 12, which engages a stationary brush 13, and are conveyed to a hopper 18 leading to a separating device by which the garlic seeds are finally removed, the bran and the meal passing by the routes 21, 22 to the flour on its path to the bolting devices.
