Abstract
494,345. Indicating faults ; measuring resistances. NORTH METROPOLITAN ELECTRIC POWER SUPPLY CO., and SHOTTER, G. F. April 27, 1937, No. 12059, [Class 37] Pressure tests of insulation are effected by applying a potential through a resistor in parallel with a gaseous discharge device, a condenser being alternatively switched in parallel in place of the resistor. With resistor 1, Fig. 1, in parallel to the discharge tube 4, and the load at 5 subject therefore to the continuous supply from transformer 7, the tube 4 should not glow if the insulation is sound. With the condenser 3 in circuit instead of the resistor 1, the rate of flashing of the tube 4 will be a measure of insulation resistance. Resistor 10 limits the short-circuit current, and the apparatus can thus be employed in continuity tests. In another arrangement, Fig. 2, the discharge tube is in parallel with a variable resistor 11 and the amount of resistance required to light the tube 4 is a measure of the resistance under test, the resistor 11 being calibrated in megohms. A fixed resistor 12 may be connected in series with resistor 11, and a variable shunt resistor 13 is provided for use if the glow is too faint. Resistor 13 can also be calibrated in megohms and a single reading in respect of resistors 11, 13 obtained.
