Abstract

The tensile strength of paper when in wet condition is increased by treating the paper with an esterifying agent so as to form an ester of cellulose with a carboxylic acid containing 2-5 carbon atoms, the temperature of treatment being greater than 60 DEG C., the quantity of esterifying agent being capable of fully esterifying the paper, and the duration of the treatment being at least 5 minutes but limited so that the surface layers only of the fibres constituting the paper are esterified. The esterification treatment is not preceded by any treatment with carboxylic acid. In an example, paper strips are immersed in a solution containing acetic acid, acetic anhydride, toluene, and zinc chloride, at a temperature of 100-120 DEG C. for 5-20 minutes. Petrol, benzine, benzene, carbon tetrachloride, or other diluent may be used instead of toluene. Propionic, butyric or valeric esters of cellulose, instead of cellulose acetate, may be formed on the paper.
