Abstract
494,219. Capping bottles and like containers. BARLOW, R., and STUCHBERRY, A. L. July 20, 1937, No. 6741/38. Divided out of 494,194. [Classes 125 (ii) and 125 (iii)] Cans and like containers are closed by caps 3 having a peripheral flange 4 or tongues curled inwardly beneath a shoulder on the container 1 by means of a curling die. The caps may be formed of frangible material such as thin sheet aluminium and they contain packing discs 5, 6 of cork and metal respectively. The preferred form of shoulder on the container is an open curl 2 as shown, and the operation of the curling die causes the lower edge of the flange 4 to curl inwards to interlock with the curl 2. The central part of the cap is cut to form a tongue, with a raised portion so that it can be easily lifted, and with weakened extensions to the edge. The cap may be of dished shape, as shown in Fig. 5, to obtain an extensive sealing surface by the engagement of the packing disc 5 with the top and the inner face of the container curl 2. The closuring operation may be carried out by the curling machine described in Specification 494,194.
