494,147. Pulverulent and gaseous fuel furnaces. BABCOCK & WILCOX, Ltd. Jan. 19, 1937, No. 1614. Convention date, Jan. 31, 1936. [Class 51 (i)] [Also in Group XIII] In a steam boiler providing means for preventing excessive superheat temperatures, pulverized coal burners 122 and gas burners 160, 162 on opposite sides of the furnace discharge into spaces 10, 12 separated by fluidcooled tubes 14, 16 and leading through a secondary combustion chamber 22 to parallel dampered gas passes 28, 30 across the entrances to which extend steam generating tubes 24, 26. Economizer sections 26, 42, 44 and superheater sections 32, 34 are arranged in the gas passes. The tubes 24, 26 which constitute a slag screen extend between drums 62, 64 and drum 66, respectively connected to an elevated steam and water drum 60 by wall tubes 78, 76, and 68, 70, of the gas passes. Other generating tubes comprise furnace wall tubes 110, 120 and the tubes 14, 16 which diverge upwardly to form slag screens 18, 20. Control of superheat is effected by independent operation of the different sets of burners to vary the relative temperature of the gas streams in the two passes and also by dampers 40, 48 controlling the quantity of the gases. Elongated openings 176, 178 in the furnace walls provide spaces for withdrawal of superheater or economizer elements. The tubes 68, 70 may be supported from drum 60 by means of short tube sections 192 carrying depending lugs to which are bolted upstanding lugs welded to the tubes. In a modification, the tube screens 24, 26 are replaced by tubes extending between headers.
