Abstract

Apparatus for recovery of naphthalene from oil containing it comprises a cooled mixer 3 in which liquid oil and naphthalene are cooled to form a paste, a heated press 7 in which the paste is treated to expel the oil, a crystallizer 12 in which this oil is further cooled to crystallize naphthalene still in solution, and a reservoir 10 between the press and crystallizer for storing the oil. The crystallizer may also be connected to the initial feed 2 and be of sufficient capacity to store <PICT:0493992/IV/1> the crude oil when the press is idle. The oil is cooled in mixer 3 to 40-50 DEG C., and the oil leaving press 7 is at 50-60 DEG C. The reservoir 10 has a capacity sufficient to store this oil while crystallization is in progress or the crystallizer is being emptied or cleaned. After cooling in crystallizer 12, residual oil passes to a reservoir 14, and the separated naphthalene is re-liquefied. The crystallizer is fitted for this purpose with tubes 13 connectable to a source of heating or cooling medium. The liquefied naphthalene is then run into mixer 3. A branch 23 of the feed pipe 2 allows the crystallizer to be used as a reservoir for crude oil. Several crystallizers may be provided.
