Abstract
492,923. 'Luminescent materials. EVANS, W. E. (Riedel-E. de HaÙn Akt.-Ges., J. D.) Sept. 13, 1937, No. 24904. [Class 98 (i)] A durable yellow-luminescent zinc sulphidezinc oxide composition containing about 2 per cent of zinc oxide is produced by heating to incandescence the usual materials for producing the luminescent sulphide (a) under oxidizing conditions, or (b) after adding thereto a content of zinc oxide or of compounds which produce zinc oxide when heated, e.g. zinc hydroxide or carbonate. The composition phosphoresces well with daylight excitation, but radium or mesothorium may be added as exciter. It may be used with luminous paint for clocks, crucifixes, signs, &c. Examples of the preparation of the composition are given in which the zinc sulphide is activated by copper, and barium chloride or sodium chloride is used as flux.
