Abstract
Filaments, foils, and similar materials, particularly those made of cellulose acetate and other organic derivatives of cellulose, are treated with fluids under superatmospheric pressure, while travelling through a substantially closed apparatus, the filaments, &c., <PICT:0492613/IV/1> <PICT:0492613/IV/2> entering the treatment zone through a body of inert liquid under superatmospheric pressure contained inside the apparatus. One form of the apparatus consists of a single chamber, the floor of which is covered with inert liquid, the filaments, &c., passing upwards through the inert liquid into the treatment zone. The filaments, &c., may be subjected to mechanical stretching simultaneously with their treatment with compressed fluid. The inert liquid may be water, mercury, or an organic liquid, while the treatment fluid may be a gaseous saponifying agent or merely a stretch-assisting agent, such as steam or hot water. In Fig. 1, the filaments 15 are passed through the apparatus by means of rollers 10, 11 and 18, stretching tension being applied between rollers 11 and 18. The filaments enter the treatment compartment 8 through an inert liquid, and are subjected to the action of steam issuing from jets 12. The inert liquid is compressed by introducing air or other inert gas at valve 25, while the inert liquid may be maintained at a uniform temperature by continuously passing inert liquid in at valve 7 and out at valve 6. Alternatively, the valve 6 may be shut and the inert liquid may completely fill the compartment 9, entering at valve 7 and leaving at valve 25. In Fig. 2, inert liquid is contained in a \sx-shaped vessel 20, through which the filaments 15 are led with the aid of guides 22. If required, the filaments, &c. may pass through inert liquid after leaving the treatment zone and before emerging into the atmosphere. Alternatively, the filaments, &c. may be sprayed with cold water immediately on leaving the treatment zone. Specifications 443,707 and 443,773 are referred to.
