Abstract

Alkali-resistant varnishes are prepared containing glycerides or ricinenic acid or the corresponding stand oils and heat-hardenable oil-soluble phenol-formaldehyde condensation products. The hardening of the blended varnish, which may be carried out in film form, is promoted by the addition of oil-soluble acidic materials such as monoesters of sulphuric, phosphoric acid sulpho-acids, organic halides or of driers such as manganese compounds. In examples synourin oil is blended with a condensation product of formaldehyde and p-tert.-butylphenol, p-iso-propylphenol, p-tert.-amylphenol, p-cyclohexylphenol, p-tert.-octylphenol, p-cumylphenol, phenols obtained by condensing o-cresol and ketones, 1 : 3 : 5-methyl-iso-propylphenol, or cresol.
