Abstract
Benzyloxyalkyl esters of aromatic sulphonic acids are prepared by treating a glycol monobenzyl ether with an aromatic sulphonyl chloride in the presence of a basic condensing agent, such as pyridine. Examples are given of the manufacture of esters from (1) ethylene glycol monobenzyl ether and benzenesulphonyl chloride; or (example 2) p-toluenesulphonyl chloride; (3) trimethyleneglycol monobenzyl ether and p-toluenesulphonyl chloride; and (4) propylene glycol 1-monobenzyl ether and p-toluenesulphonyl chloride. The benzyloxyalkyl sulphonates may be used to convert hydroxy or amino compounds into O- or N-benzyloxyalkyl derivatives, and these derivatives may be converted, by acid hydrolysis, into hydroxyalkyl derivatives. In examples of these processes, (5) phenol and the product of example 2 yield phenyl benzyloxyethyl ether; (6) p-aminophenol and the product of example 2 yield p-di(benzyloxyethyl)aminophenyl benzyloxyethyl ether; the sulphate of this product is mentioned; the hydrochloride of the product, by hydrolysis with dilute hydrochloric acid, yields phenylmorpholine p-hydroxyethyl ether, from which an acetate is obtainable by reaction with acetyl chloride; (7) 8-hydroxyquinoline and the product of example 2 yield the benzyloxyethyl ether of 8-hydroxyquinoline; (8) the product of example 7 is hydrolysed with dilute hydrochloric acid to yield the hydroxyethyl ether of 8-hydroxyquinoline.
