Abstract

491,217. Gun mountings. MOTLEY, L. Feb. 26, 1937, No. 5818. [Class 92 (i)] A gun mounting particularly for machine guns and automatic rifles comprises a rotatable gunner's seat 1 and a gun or gun-supporting part 14 which swings both for training and elevation independently of the seat and passes on one side of the gunner to his rear where it is pivotally supported. The arrangement permits of direct manipulation of the gun about an axis Z for elevation and an axis Y for training, these axes being able to swing also about the axis X of the gunner's seat. In the form shown, the gun is detachably connected by fittings 2, 3 to an arm 14 hinged on the axis Z to the upper part of a pillar 16 mounted for rotation about axis Y in a bearing 17 integral with the base 10 of the seat 1. The spindle 4 depending from the base of the seat is rotatable in bearings 7, 8 supported by a tripod 6. The gun support 14 is made telescopic and the weight of the gun is counterbalanced about the axis Z by springs 19 connected at their lower ends to a sleeve 21 moving with the pillar 16. In a modification, the gun is supported from the fitting 2 by a gimbal joint which also permits of rotation of the gun about its own axis.
