[Class 78 (iii)] The framing of a lifting-jack is supported normally on wheels f through the medium of springs in the boxes j. On taking up the strain of the load, the springs are compressed gradually until the frame b rests on the ground. The lifting-mechanism, comprising a screw 10, motor 16, chain-gear 18 and worm gearing 19 driving the nut 9, is all mounted to swivel about pivots x, which also form the pivots for the bail v for pushing the appliance about. A locking-pin 4, which fixes all the parts against swivelling during transit, is removed before hoisting commences.
