Abstract

490,730. Fluid-pressure servomotorcontrol systems. AKTIEBOLAGET BOLINDER-MUNKTELL. Dec. 20, 1937, No. 35271. Convention date, Jan. 14. [Class 135] [Also in Group XXIV] A fluid control mechanism for the forward and reversing gear of an engine, and in particular a marine engine, comprises a differential piston 7, 8, operating the gear-shift lever through a rod 3, to the two sides 11 and 12 of which pressure fluid can be admitted under control of a manually actuated valve 15 from an inlet 18. When pressure fluid is supplied to chamber 11 the piston is moved to the left, the chamber 12 being opened to an exhaust outlet 13 at the same time, and the gear is moved to the ahead position. Similarly, the admission of pressure fluid to chamber 12 moves the piston to the right for the reverse position. For neutral the piston occupies a central position as shown with pressure supplied to both sides of the piston and to ensure that the piston is retained in this central position a further auxiliary piston 9 is provided surrounding a reduced portion 8 of the main piston 7, 8 and having itself a reduced portion providing a chamber 10 communicating with the outlet 13. The piston 9, together with the piston 8, is of greater area than the piston 7 so that any tendency of the control piston 7, 8 to move to the right is resisted. In the opposite direction of movement, the piston 9 abuts against a shoulder 14 in the cylinder and the pressure to move the piston 7, 8 further is effective only on the area of the part 8 which is smaller than the piston 7 and this movement to the left is also prevented. When the piston has been moved into the position for ahead running the fluid pressure is relieved, so that the pump supplying the pressure fluid can run idly, by means of a plunger 33, acting against a spring- toggle mechanism 34, 36, which is exposed to the pressure in the chamber 11. When the piston reaches the end of its travel the pressure rises and moves the plunger 33 to open a passage 38 to the exhaust outlet 13.
