Abstract

Resins are prepared by condensing polyhydric alcohols and polycarboxylic acids, with or without monocarboxylic acids having at least six carbon atoms (or polyhydric partial esters thereof), in the presence of polyvinyl acetate, propionate, or butyrate. Materials specified are: polyhydric alcohols-glycols, glycerol, trimethylolpropane, pentaerythritol, or mixtures thereof; polycarboxylic acids-phthalic, adipic, succinic, and maleic acids, and the tricarboxylic acids obtainable by condensation of maleic acid with colophony or abietic acid as described in Specification 355,281; monocarboxylic acids-natural resin acids such as colophony or abietic acid, and acids from fats, drying, and semi-drying oils. The polyvinyl ester may be present ab initio or added during the final stages. In examples: (1), (2), (5) polyvinyl acetate, adipic acid, and (1) glycerol, (2) diethylene glycol, (5) phthalic acid and diethylene glycol, are condensed; (3), (4) polyvinyl acetate, an abietic acid-maleic acid condensate, and (3) diethylene glycol, (4) glycerol monolinoleate, or glycerol and linoleic acid, are condensed; (6) a lacquer consisting of an alcohol solution of polyvinyl acetate and a maleic acid-glycerol condensate is burnt-in; (7) a lacquer consisting of an alcohol-toluene solution of polyvinyl acetate, an abietic acid-maleic acid condensate, and diethylene glycol is burnt-in.
