Abstract

Transparent films or sheets of organic hydrophilic colloids such as gelatine, casein, cellulose hydrate, cellulose ethers or oxy-ethers, are fireproofed by incorporating therein a water-soluble salt of an aliphatic organic nitrogen base with an acid of phosphorus. The cellulose hydrate may be regenerated from viscose, cuprammonium cellulose, or zinc chloride solution of cellulose or made by deesterifying cellulose esters such as the acetate or nitrate. Suitable organic bases are primary, secondary or tertiary amines, tetra - alkyl ammonium hydroxides, and their alkyl or hydroxy derivatives. The acid may be orthophosphoric, pyrophosphoric, metaphosphoric, hypophosphoric, phosphorus or hypophosphorous acids. The fireproofing agent may be applied in aqueous solution or added to a solution of the colloid from which the sheet or films are made. Ammonium bromide, iodide, selenate, sulphate or phosphate may be added. Examples describe the treatment of regenerated cellulose sheet with di-(triethanolamine) monohydrogen orthophosphate or propylamine metaphosphate. The treated sheet may be softened by glycerine before drying. Specification 437,226, [Group VIII], is referred to.ALSO:Transparent films or sheets of organic hydrophilic colloids such as gelatine, are fireproofed by incorporating therein a water-soluble salt of an aliphatic organic nitrogen base with an acid of phosphorus. Suitable organic bases are primary, secondary or tertiary amines, tetra-alkyl ammonium hydroxides, and their alkyl or hydroxy derivatives. The acid may be orthophosphoric, pyrophosphoric, metaphosphoric, hypophosphoric, phosphorous or hypophosphorous acids.
