Abstract

490,381. Lenses &c. WILLIAMS, W. E. Feb. 13, 1937, No. 4373. [Class 97 (i)] An achromatic lens &c. comprises two solid members of moulded synthetic resin such as polymerized methyl methacrylate, united with or integral with a rim portion or portions of the same or similar material so as to leave between them a cell or cavity which is filled with a liquid or semi-liquid. In the form shown, one solid member consists of a lens 1 formed integrally with a rim 2 and the other solid member consists of a thin curved plate 3 with an integral rim 4. The space 5 left between the members 1, 3 when the rims 2, 4 are butted together, is filled with liquid or semi-liquid which may be introduced through an aperture 6 in the rim 2, the aperture being afterwards closed by a cemented-in plug 7. The rims 2, 4 are secured together by cement which, when the members 1, 3 consist of polymerized methyl methacrylate, may be a solution of the monomer form of the same substance which will afterwards polymerize and become substantially the same substance as the members 1, 3. If the filling for the space 5 cannot be poured at a temperature at which the members 1, 3 are solid, it can be made by moulding the filling material at so low a temperature that it is solid and incorporating it whilst still solid between the outer members.
