Abstract

Raw bast fibres, for example in the form of a card sliver which may be wound on a perforated beam or formed into laps, are pretreated with an acid, then treated with elementary chlorine or an acid chlorine lye, and finally subjected to an alkaline boil, the treatments with the chlorine lye and the alkali, at least, being conducted whilst the treatment liquid is caused to flow through the material in a radial direction. The process is preferably conducted in an apparatus comprising a closed vessel for containing the fibrous material and having an inner perforated wall within which is disposed a hollow perforated member, the outer wall and the inner hollow perforated member being connected to means which circulate liquor radially through the material from one to the other.
