Abstract
488,921. Electric signalling systems ; weighing - apparatus. MUNRO, R., and MORTON, J. M. L. Oct. 15, 1936, Nos. 27995 /36 and 7478 /37. [Class 40 (i)] [Also in Group XVIII] An electric micro-balance for precise measuring operations, comprises a magnet in the field of which is located a pair of coils carried by a vibratory armature system, one of the coils serving to vibrate the armature system when supplied with current of pre-selected frequency, and the other coil serving as an output coil of which the potential is a function of the mass of the armature svstem. As shown for ascertaining the weight of a mass placed in a pan 15 the magnet assembly comprises two pot magnets 7, 8 with polepieces 7a, 8a. A link 11 passes through the polepieces and is secured to diaphragms 9, 10 suspended adjacent the ends of the magnets by means of corrugated arms 16. Coils 2, 3 are connected to the diaphragms, the coil 2 being energized from A.C. mains, a valve oscillator or other preferably low frequency oscillator 4. The coil 3 is connected to the input of a valve or other amplifier 5 connected to a voltmeter 6 graduated to read directly in grammes or other units of mass. When a mass is placed on the pan 15 the vibratory movements of the armature system caused by the energization of the coil 2, are proportionately clamped and the weight of the mass is indicated on the voltmeter 6. In a modification, the ink 11 is dispensed with and the diaphragm and magnet assembly is made airtight so that the column of entrapped air vibrates the diaphragm 10.
