Abstract

487,468. Vehicle spring suspensions. VOIGT, C. A. Aug. 31, 1937, No. 23768. Convention date, Sept. 9, 1936. [Classes 103 (vi), 108 (ii), and 108 (iii)] [Also in Group XXXI] In a vehicle spring-suspension or a resilient mounting for machines, motors, &c. of the kind comprising metal and rubber units in combination, the rubber unit is stressed in shear or torsion and is connected in parallel with the metal unit, means being provided for adjusting one of the units to an unloaded position whereby the proportion of load which each unit sustains may be varied. In general, the adjustment is effected so that the metallic unit takes the normal or static load entirely and the rubber unit is affected solely by the additional load. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, an annulus 4 of rubber is disposed between two sleeves 2, 3 having closed ends between which is located a helical spring 1. An indicator 5 is added to show the position at which the rubber annulus is unstressed. In Fig. 3, the wheel-carrying arm 9 of a road vehicle is adapted on displacement to stress simultaneously a rubber spring 16 in shear and a helical spring 12 in compression, the latter spring being mounted between one plate 13 on the arm 9 and an adjustable plate 14 on the vehicle frame 15. In another construction, Fig. 5, the rubber springs 23 are subjected both to shear and compressional stresses, while the load on the helical spring 22 is varied by means of an eccentric 25. Several other modifications are described, in some of which the rubber units are combined with torsional metallic springs, while in others, for example in the motor-cycle wheel suspension shown in Fig. 18, a laminated spring 57 is associated with the rubber spring, which in this case is in the form of a sleeve 66 at the pivotal end of a wheelcarrying arm 64. In all cases suitable means for adjusting one or both of the spring units is provided, and preferably an indicator, which may be located adjacent to a vehicle driver's seat, is incorporated. If desired, automatic means may be employed for adjusting the spring to its unstressed condition.
