Abstract
<PICT:0485972/III/1> The greater part of the exhaust steam of a turbine locomotive is condensed by a moist cooler and the cooling-air thereof, moistened as a result of the condensation, is subjected to the heat in the remainder of the exhaust whereby it is rendered invisible. The engine exhaust steam passes by pipes 2, 3 through a condenser 1 and the cooling-water thereof is led to a perforated pipe 7 and passes down a cooling hurdle 9 on to an inclined wall 10 leading to a trough 11 connected by pipe 4 to the circulating pump 6. Air is drawn through the hurdle by a fan 14 and passes through a condenser 13 heated by a portion of the exhaust steam, which may comprise the exhaust of the engine driving the auxiliaries. The condensate passes to the exhaust inlet 2 or the condensate discharge 3 of the condenser 1. The cooling-air is thus rendered invisible. Modifications are described comprising arrangements of two or more hurdles. These may be directly associated with the condensers. Instead of the cooling-air passing through the condenser 13, it may be heated by admixture with additional hot air passed therethrough. In a further modification of the arrangement shown, a trickler condenser is used in lieu of condenser 1. In this construction, the cooling-water from the holes 7 trickle over air-cooled steam tubes.
