Abstract
485,644. Pleating paper &c. ALADDIN INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Aug. 19, 1936, No. 22853. Void. Convention date, Aug. 20, 1935. [Class 141] [Also in Groups XVI, XI, and XVII] Curved pleated paper or other sheet material is produced by first pleating the material in normal manner, and then compressing the pleats and applying a bending pressure edgewise of the pleats while the pleats are compressed. Blanks so shaped can be opened out and bent into tubular or other form and the free ends fastened together to produce articles such as lamp and candle shades, and packing members for glassware &c. In the machine shown in Fig. 1, the sheet material 2 is fed from a roll 1 between pleating-rollers 9, 10, and the pleats are compressed by feeding the pleated material by means of another pair of ribbed rollers 17, 18 into a confined space between a table 14 and an upper plate 16 adjustable by means of a screw 21 to give sufficient grip on the pleats to restrain the forward motion of the material. A cutter 23 is provided at the edge of the table 14 for cutting the issuing material into lengths sufficient for making several of the intended articles. The upper rollers 9, 17 are adjustable by means of screws 36 and spring-supported journal boxes. Prong-like extensions 13, 15 on the table 14 and plate 16 extend through grooves in the rollers 17, 18 near to the pleating rollers 9, 10 to receive the material therefrom. If rounded instead of sharply creased pleats are desired, spacers are interleaved in the pleats before compression. The compressed pleated blanks are submitted to bending pressure in a press having a die 44, Fig. 4, formed with a curved central depression lined with a brass jacket 45, and a complementary pressure block 46 operated by a hand-lever 60 or power-driven. The die is preferably heated to facilitate bending. The die has a fixed side wall 52 and a, movable side wall 53 adjustable by means of a screw 55 on slide rods 54 so that blanks 48 of different lengths can be gripped between the side walls, the pressure block 46 being correspondingly adjustable by means of packing pieces 64, 65. Before the side wall 53 is closed up, the blank is supported on guide pins 49 projected through holes in the side wall 52 ; these pins are on a sliding carrier 50 and are withdrawn before the block 46 is operated. Fig. 5 shows a shaped blank which has been opened out and bent into tubular form, with the concave surface outwards, to form a lamp shade. Compound forms, as shown in Fig. 8, can be obtained by opening out and flattening the bent blank, scoring it lengthwise at right-angles to the pleats, and folding along the score line, to give upper and lower portions of the same curvature ; or the blank may be bent in part only in the press so that the unbent part gives a portion with a straight surface ; or a strip folded upon itself may be pleated and bent and opened out to provide portions with equal and opposite curvatures. Sector blanks can be used instead of continuous strip material, in which case the pleats are of tapered instead of uniform width, and the apparatus is modified according- ly.
