Abstract

485,126. Artists' palettes; educational appliances. HAVEN, H. DE. Feb. 9, 1937, No. 3849. Convention date, Feb. 15, 1936. [Classes 11 and 146 (ii)] A painter's palette for mixing colours and for educational purposes has a surface bearing a number of graduated or stepped shades, or both, of neutral grey, so as to afford the user a number of different degrees of background brightness against which to mix and evaluate his pigments and so as not to cause confusion due to colour contrast, and is removably or otherwise provided with a surface resistant to paint. The palette may be of a conventional form, or provided with a raised edge, so that water can be poured in to prevent paint hardening, and has a preferably mat surface of vitreous enamel, hard rubber, or of a cellulose preparation on wood. Alternatively a double-sided background may be reversibly clipped to a glass or other transparent surface. The shaded areas of the palette may be in the form of bands, separated by scale lines, or may be areas on a sinuous band, as in Fig. 7, where the areas darken successively from 15 to 18, 19 to 22 and so on. The area devoted to each shade may vary, most space being devoted to those, say the darker shades, which will be most used. The raised rim may be of an intermediate shade. In the case of a heart-shaped palette the shade areas are curved round to centre on the thumbhole.
