Abstract
484,324. Materials for making coke. GRIGGS, A. R. Dec. 8, 1936, No. 33679. [Class 55 (ii)] A two-stage process for carbonizing pitch comprises partly coking the material in an externally heated retort followed by completion of the coking by internal heating in a separate closed chamber by the passage therethrough of non-oxidizing hot gas or products of combustion. The partly coked pitch is sufficiently solid to be broken up into lumps before it is introduced into the internally heated chamber. A vertical retort 2, supplied with lumps of pitch from externally heated retorts 1, is heated by combustion products from a burner 5 supplied with gas from a. producer 4, recirculated gas being also introduced into the retort 2 or mixed with the producer gas through valve 7. Surplus gas from the retort may be used for heating the externally heated retorts 1. 8 To 14 per cent of volatile matter remains in the pitch after the first stage and a temperature of 1000 to 1100‹ C. is necessary in the second stage to drive this off. Specification 469,607 is referred to.
