Abstract
483,767. Sights for aircraft guns. ALKAN, R. Jan. 27, 1937, No. 2383. Convention date, Feb. 7, 1936. [Class 92 (ii)] Means for automatically correcting the angle between the sight and gun to suit the speed of the aircraft and to take account of the aiming movements of the gun in azimuth and elevation comprises a lens 19, crosswires 21, and reflecting surfaces 18, 20 forming a collimator for viewing the target and an image of the crosswires superposed thereon. The casing of the collimator is fixed to the gun, the crosswire support 17 being universally jointed to the casing at 12, 13 so as to be movable horizontally and vertically by mechanism controlled by flexible connections with the gun support 28. This support is pivoted horizontally at 28a in a. frame 27 turning in azimuth about an axle 25 carried by the usual U-shaped elevating arm 25a of an aircraft ring mounting 39. The mechanism controlling the crosswire support 17 comprises a crank-shaft 14 carrying at one end a crank pin engaging a slide 16 on the support 17 and at the other end a crank pin 5 engaging a pivoted inclined plane 4 which causes the crank shaft to slide in the hub of its driving worm wheel 7. This wheel is rotated to conform with azimuthal rotations of the turret ring 39 by a flexible shaft 36 connected to a worm 11. Azimuthal rotations of the frame 27 apply a correcting axial movement to the worm through cam 26. roller 31, rocker 32, cable 10 and spring controlled lever 9. Elevational movements of the arm 25a are conveyed by a cable 33 to a pulley 30 on the axle 28a which pulley is also connected by a cable 1 to a pulley 2 on a shaft carrying a cam 3 engaging the inclined plane 4. Vertical movements depending on gun elevation are thus conveyed to the crosswire support 17 as the crank-shaft 14 slides and revolves. To adjust the apparatus for varying speeds of aircraft the casing carrying the crank-shaft is adjustable relatively to the collimator casing which causes the block 16 to slide in the support 17. The pins connecting the collimator casing to the gun pass through resilient bushes to eliminate the effects of shock. The crosswires are preferably illuminated by a lamp 23 fitted with a reflector 24 and diffusion screen 22.
