Abstract

483,633. Microscopes. ZEISS, C., [Firm of]. Oct. 14, 1937, No. 27924. Convention date, Oct. 28, 1936. [Class 97 (i)] A device for illuminating microscopic objects by transmitted light, comprising a source of light, a lamp condenser, an additional pancratic reversing system, and a microscope condenser, is characterized by the feature that the device consists of two separate constructional parts, the one of these parts which comprises the source of light and the lamp condenser, being disposed in the base of the microscope, and the other of these parts which comprises the pancratic reversing system and the microscope condenser, being fixed to that portion of the microscope stand which is above the base and below the stage and being suitably interchangeable with another microscope condenser. As shown, a housing 14 which projects between the limbs of a horse-shoe base, contains the lamp 15, lamp condenser 16, reflecting prism 17, and carries a member 19 in a slide 18. This member receives the lens 21 and the rotatable slide guide 20 for the slide 22 with iris diaphragm 24 and holder 25 for fitters 26. Mounted beneath the stage with rack and pinion adjustment 9, 10, is a slide 11 which receives a carrier 13 for the housing 27 containing the microscope condenser 28 and the pancratic reversing system 29, 30. The iris diaphragm serves as an aperture diaphragm and the mount of the lens 16 as a luminous field diaphragm. The lamp condenser 16 images the lamp in the plane of the diaphragm 24, and the pancratic reversing system images this image in the entrance pupil of the microscope condenser. The size of the fmal image is varied by simultaneously moving the lenses 30 axially by the milled ring 31. The luminous field is imaged by the lens 21 in the region of the reversing system 29, 30, and this image is imaged by the microscope condenser in the plane of the object. For oblique illumination the diaphragm 24 is moved sideways in the guide 20. The azimuth may be varied by rotation of the member 20. For dark Held illumination the housing 27 is removed and replaced by a dark-field condenser and the member 19 removed from its guide 18. The steeve 12 may hold an ordinary microscope mirror for use with an external source of light.
