Abstract

483,513. Cleaning and polishing shoes. COGAN, A. J. Nov. 12, 1936, No. 30949. [Class 138 (i)] Electrically or manually driven cleaning apparatus for shoes is mounted on a wheeled carriage 10 provided with a cupboard 12, a handle B for pushing, a folding table 15, and a sliding front table z<1>. A shaft l<2> supported on a lower table z carries, a hard brush a<5> for removing dirt and a buffing roll I, consisting of chamois leather or like discs, for final polishing. A shaft l<1> supported on an upper table p<1> carries brushes a<1>, a4 for applying tan cream or blacking respectively, and polishing brushes a<2>, a<3>. An electric motor c drives the shafts l<1>, l<2> through a belt h<2>, and an air compressor f through a belt h<1>. The compressor supplies air to a reservoir k, whence it can pass, under control of the operator, to atomizers Q<9> mounted on the cream and blacking containers d<1>, d<2>, so that a fine spray of the polish is supplied by flared nozzles to the brushes a<1>, a<4>. The latter are shrouded by hoods b<1>, b2 and a dust-collecting box v is arranged behind the brush a<5>. The compressor, Fig. 6, comprises a casing 16 carrying two cylinders 17 in which pistons 19 are reciprocated by an eccentric 21 driven by the belt h<1>. Each piston comprises a non- return inlet valve, and each cylinder has a non-return discharge valve 18 connected by a pipe Q<5> or Q<7> to the reservoir k. The latter is connected to the containers d<1> and d<2> by pipes Q<3>, Q<4> which include control valves J<1>, J<2> operable by means of push buttons 47, 48 at the front of the table p<1>. The containers d<1>, d<2> each comprise a casing in which a vessel 38 for the polish is mounted for ready removal, Fig. 11. A plug 41 in the cover 39 of the casing carries a coupling 42 for connection to the pipe Q<3> or Q<4> and an atomizing nozzle Q<9>. Compressed air is supplied to the nozzle and also to the surface of the polish, so that the latter is forced up a pipe 45 to the nozzle. For obtaining a very high polish, a buffing member, consisting of a hollow pad 51 of lamb's-wool secured in a cylinder 49, Fig. 15, may be secured on the end of the shaft l<1>. Alternatively, rolls consisting of discs of lamb'swool may be secured at each end of the shaft l<2>. The mechanism may be driven manually by means of a treadle or hand wheel.
