[Class 18] Cartons with pouring openings of the form shown in Fig. 3 are made from formed tubular bodies on forming blocks 12, Fig. 1, on a rotating spider 10, the carton body being placed on a block at station 1, the bottom flaps folded and sealed at station 2, pressure applied to the bottom and pouring holes punched in a flap at station 3, and the carton removed at station 4, to a conveyer 8. The bottom sealing mechanism at station 2 is of known form, and the spider 10 is driven by a Geneva wheel 14, Fig. 2, and driver 16 through gears 18, 20. The hole-punching mechanism at station 3 comprises punch 40, Figs. 2 and 4, reciprocated in a slide 42 by toggle links 76, 78 and a connecting rod 82 articulated to the bottom pressing member 60. Member 60 is reciprocated vertically through a toggle 62, a lever 64 pivoted at 65, a cam roll 66 and a cam 68 on a shaft 70, actuated from the driving shaft 28 through gears 72, 74. The die 44 forms part of block 12, and positive alignment of punch 40 and die 44 is ensured by providing pins 66 on the punch which enter holes 48 in the die, the die being movable in block 12 by means of shoulder screws 52, Fig. 7, and spring washer 54. At station 4, fingers 110, Fig. 8, on a stripping bracket reciprocate on a vertical slide 112, Fig. 2, by means of a connecting rod 114, levers 116, 118 and a cam roll 120 cooperating with a cam roll 122 on cam-shaft 70, the engagement of fingers 110 with the upper ends of the side flaps stripping the carton from the block. To clear the die of the punched-out portions of the carton flap, pins 90, Fig. 8, in a slide member 92 are reciprocated into and out of the die by a link 98, rock-lever 96, rock-shaft 100 and rock-lever 104 which extends into the path of a bar 106 on the stripping bracket 108. Pins 90 are held in retracted position by a spring 124. The rear face of slide 92 engages a stop member 128 of leather or other sound absorbing material.
