Abstract

482,993. Sewing-machines. TORINES, T. C. June 23, 1937, No. 17496. [Class 112] A treadle-operated sewing-machine 2 on a table 1 is turned into a recess in the table when not in use, and the treadle 4 is turned vertically alongside one of the sides 1a. The machine is lifted slightly to raise a flap 35, then allowed to sink into the recess about hinges on the table top. A hinged plate 6 is pressed downwards by the machine, against the action of springs 26. A rod 8 is pressed down by the baseplate 7 of the machine and turns a shaft 9 to cause an arm 11 to rotate. A roller 12 on the end of the arm bears on the horizontal part of an inverted- U-shaped member 13 which slides downwards in guides 14 and forces downwards a rod 15. Contacting wedges 16, 17, guide the rod 15 outwards to bear against bars 18. These are fixed to the treadle which is turned about hinges 23 to the position shown in Fig. 3. The hinges 23 are carried by a plate 19 supported on a bearing 21. In operative position the treadle and plate 19 oscillate together. A panel 24 obscures the driving wheel mechanism 3, 5, when the machine is not in use, and is connected by springs 25 to the flap 35. When the latter is raised, the panel 24 is lifted, and a rope 34, secured to the flap, pulled to slide a forked member 28 laterally and release the end of the treadle. Two springs normally urge the member 28 to grip the treadle and connect the latter to an oscillatable plate 20 supported in a bearing 22. In a modification, Fig. 11, the U-shaped member 13 is connected by links 38, having square holes 39, with the square ends 40 on a transverse shaft 41 on the treadle 4. The links 38 are connected to the lower ends of arms 43 which are pivoted at their upper ends to lugs fixed to a side 1a. The lower ends of these arms slide upon a horizontal tube against pressure of springs 47, when the rope 34 is pulled by the raising of the flap 35. The rope is secured in an eye 50 and passes round a pulley 48. When the rope is pulled, the links 38 are pressed towards each other to cause the ends 40 to enter holes 39. The machine 2 is then lowered into the table, the baseplate 7 forces down the fork 13 and the links 38 swing the treadle into a vertical position. Abutments 51 hold the links 38 in position when the fork 13 is lowered.
