Abstract

482,413. Making tubes. WILLIAMS, W. P. (American Rolling Mill Co.) Sept. 29, 1936, No. 13998/37. Divided out of 473,800. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] In forming a helical seamed tube, a strip, pulled through the machine, is corrugated and flanged, wound into a helix with the flanged edges interlocked, and the seam is then flattened. The strip is fed between driven corrugating rollers which also flange and bead the edge. It then passes between a mandrel on a turntable and helical rods which force the strip into helical form with the flange and the bead interlocked. Helically arranged rollers then bead over and flatten the seam. In the apparatus shown in Fig. 2 rollers R driven by an electromotor 125 gradually corrugate the strip from the centre, members M forming U and L flanges. The strip is then received between a mandrel 106 and helical rods 108 on a base mounted on a turntable 168 adjustable about pivots 114. Guides 107 position the strip edges. Rollers 23 on the mandrel co-operate with rollers 121, 122, 123, 134 on the turntable to engage and flatten the seam. The rollers 121 are mounted on adjustable spring arms which allow them to follow the seam. The rollers 122, 123 have a slightly flexible mounting and the rollers 124 may be rigid. The rollers 123 are adjustably mounted in respect of pipe diameter and angle of helix. The roller 124 is rotated by an electromotor 113 to pull the strip through the coiling mechanism and co-operates with a roller on the mandrel to flatten the joint. In a modification the electromotor is replaced by an air turbine. In a further modification, all the rollers are mounted on a carriage which wanders to compensate for varying location of the seam. The work may be lubricated by a flexible roller and a wick. Specification 473,800 is referred to.
